## The Data

ERCOT's generation interconnection queue holds **454 GW of requested generation capacity**—40% of all US queued generation. This represents the deepest queue depth in the grid operator's history and signals **multi-year delays** before new plants and upgrades reach operational status.

## What It Means

Large-load site selectors in ERCOT territory—particularly in data-center clusters near Austin, Dallas, and Houston—must now price in 24–48 month energization waits as a hard cost to the land decision. A facility sited in ERCOT without firm generation or on-site power (solar, battery, wind) faces grid-connection risk that pushes capex out and shapes capex up. Brownfield sites with existing gen-tie or demand-response hedges gain material value; greenfield sites need captive or contracted power to pencil.

Midland–Odessa, which posts 86.4/100 on the DCPI Excess Power score, remains the exception: strong local generation and low transmission constraint offset queue depth. Sites outside that window pay the queue tax in full.

## Why This Matters Now

The queue depth is not a forecast; it is a current fact. Every MW of generation that enters ERCOT's queue assumes grid headroom that no longer exists. Interconnection studies now routinely trigger upgrades to gen-tie, transmission, and substation infrastructure—delays that compound. A facility that depends on grid connection timing is a facility that will miss its power-on date.

Capacity planners should audit their ERCOT energy assumptions against actual queue position, not promotional regional growth claims. The grid operator has published interconnection wait lists publicly; use them.
